Nach Jahren der Unterdrückung
kämpfte ich mich letztlich frei,
und begann erneut zu atmen :
frischen, kalten Morgenduft -
an einem nebligen Frühlingsmorgen.

Ich spürte noch das Grauen,
und dacht' es war schon lang vorbei,
und ich weiß nicht, wie ich's machte,
dass ich lange, lange Zeit musst weder
fühlen, noch zurückseh'n.

Und ich rannte, und ich atmete,
die frische Frühlingsluft,
und sah Aschewolken steigen
in dem Nebel, als der Krach
wie Glocken läutete!

Als der Nebel wurd' zur Asche
spürte ich die alte Last;
wie ein Schatten der Vergangenheit,
ein ekliges Gespenst,
das ich lange nicht erblickte.

Und ich rannte, fiel zu Boden,
als ich dachte noch zu geh'n,
fühlte Dunkelheit um mich,
nun im kalten, nassen Schmutze
der Vergangenheit verloren,
bin ich wohl, was ich wohl bin ~
ja, ein Bewohner dieser Hölle;
sie lässt uns nicht mehr geh'n,
nie mehr, so lang' wir sind!

Oh ich hasse,
ich verfluche dich!
Nein, ich wollt' nicht zurück;
doch da lieg ich nun, voll Asche
einer lange toten Welt.
